“He who wishes to understand the poet must go to the poet’s land”
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)
Visitors to Bad Bertrich have a great advantage when it comes to “understanding” the poet Clara Viebig. They do not have to “go to the poet’s land” because they are already there – in the place where a large number of Viebig’s works were written. (Prof. Dr. Hermann Gelhaus, University of Trier)
Clara Viebig was one of the most widely-read authors in Germany in the early 20th century. She regularly spent her summer holidays in Bad Bertrich and immortalised the region in many of her novellas. In 2010, she would have been 150 years old.

Clara Viebig Society
On 31 July 1992, the Clara-Viebig-Gesellschaft (Clara Viebig Society) was founded in Bad Bertrich to pay homage to Clara Viebig. The aims of the society are to preserve the poet’s literary legacy, to research her oeuvre and background and to make her work accessible to the public again.
The Clara-Viebig-Saal in Bad Bertrich hosts a permanent exhibition with 10 information boards offering an impressive display on the life and work of the great poet. The society has also held literary days in Bad Bertrich since 1992. In 2008, the society opened the Clara-Viebig-Pavillon in Bad Bertrich (Kurfürstenstraße 21). This hosts the exhibition Lebenswelten-Arbeitswelten (worlds of life and work) – a collection of original letters, photographs, various editions of Viebig’s books, newspaper articles, secondary literature and an archive.
